The Brookhaven Story
"Droppin' Truff roun da Earff"
Hello, my name is DJ Raspy, creator of the Brookhaven Chronicles. The Brookhaven Chronicles was originally conceived as a podcast showcasing the assorted stories of various friends and acquaintances of the show. Though the story aspect was never really explored as fully as I intended, it did lead to some very memorable interviews with Curtis from the Creepy Sleepy Show (not to mention future star of the video podcast, "That's Our Curtis"), which, it could say, did much to establish the popularity of the Brookhaven Chronicles, a popularity that perhaps it could be said endured throughout two years of inactivity.
The Brookhaven Chronicles was born amid the rise of podcasting itself. Before Ipod released podcast support. Before the rise of Podshow, before the creation of the Podsafe Music Network. The Brookhaven Chronicles had their genesis in the days before podcasting, when I appeared semi-frequently on the Creepy Sleepy Show during its college-radio days. When the Creepy Sleepy Show finished its run on 89.1 KBHU.fm ("The Buzz"), the college radio station for Black Hills State University in Spearfish, South Dakota, I joined the cast of the Creepy Sleepy Show on a more regular basis, helping out with more production, appearing in more talksets, and generally becoming firmly ensconced in the rising world of podcasting. At that time, the number of podcasts in the world, if I'm not mistaken, was measured by the hundreds, as opposed to the hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of podcasts which exist today. There were a few emerging stars in the world of podcasting, names which now have become titans in the industry. Adam Curry, Dawn & Drew, C.C. Chapman, and of course the good guys at the Vox Monitor and the Kickass Podcasts. It was among these names that the Creepy Sleepy Show earned its stripes in podcasting, and as I grew more comfortable with the production side of things, I decided it was time to strike out on my own.
And so, the Brookhaven Chronicles was born. At first, it was simply DHP (from the Creepy Sleepy Show) and myself attempting to create a show around these interviews we conducted with Curtis, our next door neighbor, a person with a truly unique personality. We used a lot of pitch shifting the first episode to give the first of the Curtis interviews sort of a unique feel to it. I've often described it as "an audio acid trip". For some reason, when I started promoting the Brookhaven Chronicles on sites such as Myspace, people seemed to actually think the Brookhaven Chronicles was interesting. Thus encouraged, I made more episodes, bringing in as my cohost one of my best friends, a man named Jacob Williams, otherwise known as the Uberguber, host of the short-lived but intriguing podcast, Gubergab. With sleeker production, including a new Star Wars-esque intro, the Brookhaven Chronicles seemed like it was on the fast track to going somewhere.
But unforeseen circumstances, mainly involving a crappy computer and the lack of fundage to repair or upgrade it, led to the Brookhaven Chronicles being put on hyatus for two years.
Now, two years later, the Brookhaven Chronicles has returned, with DJ Raspy at the helm once again, and though I may not be really looking to alter the face of podcasting as we know it, I do believe that I will at least make a mark once again, and leave a legacy in podcasting, that will never be forgotten. Because, to my own certain knowledge, while some may "drop truth around the earth", no one else seems to be "droppin truff roun da earff."
